The project involved the replacement of the structure on Route 2027 (Maple Drive) spanning I-70 at the Speers Interchange (Exit 39).
The pre-existing Route 2027 bridge had a vertical clearance of 14.3 feet spanning I-70 resulting in the bottom beams being periodically impacted by taller vehicles traveling on I-70. To address this situation, the bridge was raised to give adequate clearance of 16.5 feet over the interstate. Providing this increased vertical clearance will impact the Route 2027 approach roadways to the bridge as well as Guttman Avenue. Minor improvements to the eastbound I-70 on and off ramps at their tie ins with Route 2027 were completed as well. Also, the new bridge is wider and provides a southbound left turn lane for traffic making the left onto the eastbound I-70 on ramp. The project only involved replacement of the structure, with no work proposed to either I-70 or the interchange. A virtual public plans display was posted on the PennDOT District 12-0 home webpage from February 7, 2022 to February 21, 2022. However, the displays from that virtual public meeting can be viewed here.
